Best Plants for the RV Life with Rock Springs RV Storage

There are many perks to living a life on the road in your RV either full-time or part of the year, but there are also some things you may miss while traveling. For those with a green-thumb, you may feel the loss of your gardening space when you pick up your home and move every few days or weeks.

Luckily, there’s a lot of information out there on growing plants in tight spaces–even RVs and mobile homes! With the right care and choices, your home on wheels can enjoy the benefits and beauty that live plants bring, no matter where you are with Rock Springs RV Storage!

Low-Light Indoor Plants

The best place to start when looking for the types of plants to house in your RV would be a search for low-light plants. While all plants need some type of light to grow, many are well-suited to indoor areas that get little sun, and some are even satisfied with indoor lighting! Here’s a list of four of our favorite low-light plants.

Philodendron or “Heart Leaf”

This plant tops our list, because it is considered by many as the easiest plant to grow indoors. It loves low-light so much, that it actually won’t do well at all if you place it in a sunny windowsill. The heart-shaped leaves offer a deep green hue to your home, and the plant can grow out and down if you decide to hang it or elevate it on a table.

Boston Ferns

A favorite of shady front porches in the summertime, a fern is a great choice for your RV as they love shade and are very hearty! The best ferns usually go on sale in early spring, so grab some up whenever you see them! These can be outside under an awning while you’re parked and brought inside during traveling, or they can be placed anywhere inside!

Peace Lily

The peace lily has a beautiful, fragrant white flower that will add both looks and a good smell to your home. They don’t need to be watered too frequently as long as the soil is moist, making them a generally low-maintenance plant.

Spider Plant

This plant is a full, vibrant greenery that has the ability to withstand temperatures down to the 30’s, but thrives best in 60-95 degree weather. Like most green plants, the spider plant will help purify your home’s air!

Outdoor Plants

During the summer months, or even winter if you’re in a warm climate, you can grow a variety of container plants that can travel inside your RV while driving, and can brighten up your outdoor area when parked.

For container gardening with flowers, there are limitless options–check out this article for some inspiration! Overall, try to use plastic pots as they will weigh less and be more durable than pottery-style pots.

Herbs are also a wonderful plant to grow in a container garden, and can provide a wonderful addition to the dinner table. Here’s an article with ideas for container gardening with herbs!

Life on the road doesn’t mean you have to miss out on the joy of your own personal garden–growing plants can be as mobile as your home on wheels! When you’re not traveling, it’s important to store your RV in a safe place, and that’s where Self Assured Storage can help. Give us a call today to check out our RV storage units!
