Moving is something that many people plan for or look forward to, but few people enjoy the process of actually doing. It’s usually never at a convenient time in life, it’s sometimes rushed, and it can be very stressful.
At Junction City Mini Storage, we are packing and organizing experts when it comes to the things in your home. We’ve talked to a lot of moving families, and here are some of the top tips we’ve received to make moving a cinch with Storage Units Junction City Mini Storage.
Label boxes with a different color sticker for whichever rooms they go in
Writing the names of rooms on every side of a box can take up valuable time when in the middle of packing–consider buying some colored stickers (like those circular ones they sell for pricing at garage sales!) and putting the same color on each side of the box to correspond to the room the boxes need to go in. If you’ll be using a moving company, it’s an easy way to make sure your things make it into the right places, and if friends or family are helping you move, you’ll be spared the same questions over and over again!
Board your pets during packing day
The last thing you need is a beloved family pet escaping out the door that the movers left open, and disappearing right before you’re moving away. When it comes time to move, put some money in the budget to board your furry family members to make sure they are safe during the hustle and bustle of moving day. For dogs, try to find a location that offers lots of outdoor and social time, so those pups will be worn out and ready to sleep when it’s time to travel!
Pack some “purge” boxes as you go
Chances are there’s not a lot of extra down time before a big move, and you may not be in the frame of mind, to decide what you want to keep and what can be donated to try and downsize. Instead of trying to make too many decisions in the stress of the moment, designate a “purge” box for each room as you pack it. Put the absolute necessities into the regular boxes, and put things that you may or may not want to keep into the purge box (or boxes). As you unpack each room, leave the purge boxes packed, and if after six months you haven’t needed the items in it, that’s a good sign that you could probably do without those extra things!
Safely dispose of all chemicals, propane tanks, and gasoline before moving day
If you’re using a moving company, be aware that they won’t be able to pack any of the above items. Instead of rushing to get rid of them the day of, or being tempted to dispose of them in an unsafe way, find out your city’s regulations for disposal of these items. If you’re pressed for time, hire a local highschool student to deliver them to the proper places for you!
Be smart about your boxes
Make sure to use small boxes for books, or you may have some aching backs or busted boxes on your hands. Also, for things that will stay packed away for months after the move, like off-season clothing and holiday decor, consider investing in some plastic bins to pack those things in so that they are ready to go straight to storage after the move.
