While lakes were not originally a huge part of Kansas’ landscape, over the years reservoirs have been constructed to create power, prevent floods, and provide drinking water. Many of these lakes are open to the public for recreational use and are stocked with a good variety of fish. Trails, paths, and beachy shores can also be found in these close-to-home bodies of water.
Crawford State Fishing Lake
Originally a project initiated by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression, this reservoir boasts a beautiful setting surrounded by nature–from grasslands to plains to woodlands.
For those interested in wildlife, this lake boasts a large and varied bird population. Cardinals, hawks, dickcissels, indigo buntings, and many shorebirds all nest near this body of water.
The fishing is also a main attraction, with many channel catfish, largemouth bass, bluegill, and crappie in the water. There are beautiful hiking paths and nature trails for hikers, runners, and bikers.
Clinton Lake
This reservoir near Lawrence was built in the 1970s to prevent flooding of the rivers nearby, and it was filled slowly to allow the natural plants and vegetation to survive and remain. This has created a perfect and healthy habitat for the many animals in the area and the fish within the lake.
Clinton State Park is on the north shores of this lake. This park has great trails, campsites, and other outdoor activities like mountain hikes, an archery range, and a marina.
Clark State Fishing Lake
Nestled into the depths of the Bluff Creek Canyon, this lake provides some amazing views and terrain that are very different from the flat plains that surround it. There are several hiking trails around the lake area, a boat launch on the water, and the water is home to plenty of fish.
Around the lake, there are 900 acres of hunting land, primitive campsites, and lots of wildlife to observe while relaxing.
Cheney Lake
Cheney Lake is a reservoir that’s on the northern fork of the Ninnescah River. Completed during the 1960’s, it’s now home to about 10,000 acres of water and seventy miles of shoreline that’s open to the public for recreational use.
It’s a great place for families, with great fishing, hiking, campsites, picnic areas, hunting, and wildlife watching areas.
Cedar Bluff Reservoir
This lake has probably the most stunning landscape of any of the bodies of water in Kansas–the tall, block limestone cliffs stand hundreds of feet above the lake’s edge, and the bluffs are wild and beautiful.
The area of the lake is over 10 square miles of water, with Cedar Bluff State Park encircling the lake on its north and south sides. It is a beautiful place to relax, enjoy the water, and be with family or friends.
